Church Council

At St. Paul's, the Church Council is responsible for general oversight of the life and activities of our congregation to the end that everything be done in accordance with the Word of God, the Lutheran Confessions, and the faith and practice of the NALC. The duties of council include:
 

  • Leading St. Paul's ​in stating its mission, long-range planning, setting goals and priorities, and evaluating its activities in light of its mission and goals.

  • Seeking to involve all members of this congregation in worship, learning, witness, service, and support.

  • Overseeing and providing for the administration of this congregation to enable it to fulfill its functions and perform its mission.

  • Maintaining financial and property matters of the congregation.

  • Handling disciplinary actions within the Congregation.

  • Emphasizing partnership with the NALC.

To accomplish these ends Church Council meets monthly throughout the year along with other various activities. Below is a quick summary of the current officer and committee positions on council.

Officers

President

Serves as the chief lay officer, presiding over council and congregational meetings, ensuring the church functions according to its mission, bylaws, and the Word of God. They oversee administrative operations, support staff, and act as a primary liaison between the pastor, congregation, and community

Secretary

Keeps accurate minutes of all meetings of the congregation and of the Congregation Council, which are available to the voting members and be preserved in Church archives. He/she is also responsible for keeping records of Council actions and distributing copies of minutes and the agenda to each Council member.

Vice-President

Shall serve as President in the event the President is unable to perform his/her duties and shall perform any additional duties as prescribed by the President. The Vice-President shall chair committees on special subjects as designated by the Congregation Council.

Treasurer

Keep the books of account of the congregation and assists in the preparation of the budget, help develop fundraising plans, and make financial information available to Council members and the public 

Committees

Christian Education

Working with the Pastor, the chairperson of this committee organizes and oversees the educational ministries within St. Paul's. Responsibilities include:

  • Attending monthly Council Meetings

  • Recruiting and empowering volunteers

  • Planning the Sunday School schedule as well as printing out lessons and equipping teachers with needed supplies

  • Planning and Coordinating Vacation Bible School (or equipping and supporting another volunteer of committee to do so)

  • Plan and execute the Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Palm Sunday

  • ​Work with the Pastor to coordinate schedules with adult education activities

  • Coordinate with other ministry heads to assist with other churchwide activities

Fellowship

This ministry seeks to nurture the fellowship among members of St. Paul's. The head of this committee is responsible for coordinating St. Paul's social gatherings throughout the years for the purpose of allowing members, especially new member, to meet and develop personal relationships with the larger body of the church. These include:

  • Sunday Social Hours

  • Easter Breakfast

  • Church Picnic

  • Thanksgiving Feast

  • Confirmation & Graduate Sunday

  • VBS Meal

Finance 

This committee exercises oversight of all the financial affairs of the congregation to verify that they are conducted efficiently and responsibly. The Finance Committee shall also create, manage and present monthly finance reports for council meetings; explore opportunities for financial growth including investment funds or other methods to secure our financial future; prepare a draft budget for the succeeding year to be reviewed by the Church Council and later presented at the yearly congregation meeting for approval.

Outreach

This ministry seeks to demonstrate the love of God in Christ Jesus to the surrounding community and world through concrete acts of service. Working with the Pastor, the Outreach head will determine ways in which this can be done effectively. Previous and current Outreach Endeavors include the Cabot Foodbank, TryLife, Collections for First Responders, Kids Against Hunger Food Build, NALC Disaster Relief Collections, Operation Christmas Child, World Vision Volunteer Days, etc. The Outreach Committee is also responsible for keeping the "Outreach Hub" up-to-date with the latest service opportunities.  

Property

The goal of this ministry is to provide leadership and oversight for the care, maintenance, improvement, and long-term planning of all church-owned property, buildings, homes, and grounds so they remain safe, functional, welcoming, and supportive of the St. Paul’s mission and ministries. Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing routine maintenance of all facilities (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing etc.)

  • Scheduling regular inspections

  • Managing Custodial Supplies

  • Identifying Repairs

  • Recommending future projects

  • Coordinating Church cleanup days

Stewardship

This ministry seeks to promote the expression of Christian faith through stewardship in the lives of the members of the congregation so as to lead all members to higher levels of proportionate giving of their time, talents, and tithes for the Lord's work in the congregational, denominational, and worldwide ministries. The chair for this committee will work with the Pastor to develop appropriate ways to educate and spur the church on to greater giving. Finally, this committee is also responsible for recruiting, training, and scheduling Tellers.
